Jenin Camp: Education, Memory, and Women’s Solidarity in Palestine
As part of an international solidarity project led by the Jenin Camp-based association Not to Forget (West Bank), I entered the Jenin Camp — located only fifteen minutes walking from the Jenin city center, yet widely considered a ghetto. Founded in 2002 by a group of social activists and refugee women, the association carries out educational initiatives and seeks international partnerships to provide children with essential items. The School Bags for Jenin Camp project was a pre–back-to-school distribution day, held in memory of Akram Ibrahim Abu Sabaa, with his mother present. Alongside documenting the event, I created a series of portraits of the volunteers — local Palestinian women and young women from Jordan — who work tirelessly with the association to support children and families in the camp. From the Not to Forget premises, we walked toward the district where the new headquarters will be built. On our way back, we visited the Freedom Theatre, founded by Juliano Mer Khamis.
