Emanuele Errante: A Sonic Journey Through Tradition
On Saturday, May 18 2024, as part of the program Ri(vis)ti, we were graced with the return of sound artist Emanuele Errante to Ottaviano. His mission? To explore the possibility of preserving and revisiting the traces of our rites. As we look back at our black and white photos over the years, we’re reminded of the emotions that time has faded. Errante, however, offers us a different kind of memory.
Instead of capturing images, Errante collected sounds amidst the festivities. These sounds, echoes of our shared experiences, were then presented to us in the deconsecrated church of the Ave Gratia Plena convent. Through his artistic interpretation, Errante invites us to experience these sounds in a new light, to see ourselves in a different way.
Our choice of venue, the deconsecrated Church of the Ave Gratia Plena convent on Via salita san Michele, was no accident. We wanted to invite inhabitants of Ottaviano to rediscover this space, to question what lies within, and to learn its stories. The panels we installed narrate the history of the church and of San Michele.
Emanuele Errante, a composer and sound artist from Baia, is renowned for his experimental music that spans ambient and Modern Classical genres. His minimalist approach allows him to create emotional and evocative soundscapes. His works, often integrating field recordings, are distinguished by their emotional depth and suggestive capacity. After a youth spent creating music on synthesizers, Errante transitioned to computer music in the early 2000s. In recent years, he has returned to a workflow based almost exclusively on hardware.
