On 8 March 2015, the live arts collective Kulturscio’k invited a group of women to participate in a portrait performance staged inside a temporary studio. This studio was part of an ongoing photographic research project I had begun earlier, in which I asked actresses to explore body shapes for one of my visual studies.
The setup was minimal yet deliberate:
A single source of light.
A fabric backdrop.
A reflector.
A space suspended between public and private.
The declared theme: femininity.
Portraiture is not neutral. It is a process of adequacy: a negotiation of bodies, shapes, faces, intentions, gazes, nudity or not, postures. Backs curved or straight. Expressions offered or withheld, eyes that look, eyes that are observed, projects, plans, aspirations. Poses, curved backs or not. That is all we can see and photography is unfair. Like desire. And images are so imperfect.
