Naples winter landing: aerial approach and seascape
Naples is a complex city made of overlapping layers that tend to engulf the observer from within. From its chaotic density to its deep historical stratifications, it is difficult to gain a coherent overall view when navigating the city from the inside. Yet, Naples reveals a distinct and powerful identity when seen from afar. Among the most striking vantage points are the views offered by maritime or aerial arrival. Approaching the city slowly by ferry from the Gulf offers a unique cinematic travelling shot that unveils its coastline and topography. A similarly revealing experience occurs when arriving by plane. This series of photographs documents a specific flight path during a sunny afternoon in February. The yellowish winter light brought into view the island of Nisida, then the former industrial area of Bagnoli, followed by the Fuorigrotta district with the unmistakable presence of the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. The route continues over Vomero hill, where the older Stadio Arturo Collana emerges, before finally opening up onto the wide and iconic view of the Gulf of Naples: the Sorrento coastline stretching into the horizon, the historic centre unfolding below, and the business district rising behind itβframed by the looming presence of Mount Vesuvius. Far from clichΓ© postcard imagery, this perspective brings forth Naplesβ topographic harshness, the diversity of its architecture, and the unexpected clarity of a winter afternoon.
