Snowy performance walk and a multi-sensory installation
Snowy is a performance walk and a multi-sensory installation that lingers within snow, ice, prevailing weather conditions, darkness and their effects.
Snowy takes place near the Viikki-Vanhankaupunginlahti nature reserve in Helsinki, mostly outdoors.
We have walked with the camera in the fells, made snowmen and rolled on thin ice. We have fallen on our skis, and sunk into the snow. We saw a crow stucking its whole head into a snow drift, a magpie flying over us with its belly and beak covered in blood, we saw spooking ptarmigans, romping willow grouses and hares disappearing into the whiteness. We read reports and statistics, peered into microscopes and tele-objectives. We listened to experts and learned new words. We tasted höytäkkä, nattura, kiituma and höytelö, and smelled härmä, kuura and kohva. We listened to the snowy silence and the small jingle of the freezing snow falling on the snow crust. We lingered in the shimmering twilight and dreamed of snowfields and glaciers. We admire and dread the forces of winter and melting. We fear the future and mourn the passing. Snowy is multi-directional like a snowflake and we approach it from different, even contradictory perspectives. Snow is water, water is life, metamorphosis never stops. Change, past and future are all present in the snow. We have worked in Kilpisjärvi, Jokkmokk and Helsinki. The weather has defined and continues to define and guide our work, taking us in unexpected directions. Sometimes you have to slow down when it is so beautiful and amazing. Sometimes you can’t move forward when it snows and winds and blizzards. We invite you, the audience, to join us to be with these themes through walking, perceiving, photography, words and embodiment.
The working group comprises performance, photography and visual artists: Anttoni Halonen, Heli Keskikallio, Jenni Laiti and Soile Voima.
